User Review Ultimate WATER PURIFIER Buying Guide.!

Hey guys...! I wanted to buy a Water Purifier recently... and call it a habit.. But I NEED to EXTENSIVLY research something before Buying. So.. I thought Let's share my research.

Most of us just drink RO Water without even knowing what we are drinking. In Most cases.. The RO Water we drink is just a tasteless liquid which has no health benefits at all but just a medium to quench our thirst.

This is a comprehensive Guide covering most of the aspects one should look at before Buying a Water Purifier. I Focused upon HEALTH instead of fancy Features.

First Confusion is always about.. What to Choose...eh..? I mean.. there are SEVERAL VARIANTS..! RO.. UV... UF... NF... Alkaline... Copper... and even their SEVERAL Combinations..!!!! :eek:o_O.

FIRST AND MOST IMPROTANT STEP :

If your TAP Water TDS is Below or around 200 mg/l --> UV + UF Combination.
If your TAP Water TDS is above 300 mg/l --> RO+UV+UF+ TDS Controller Combination. ( Set Water Output TDS above 150mg/l ).
If your TAP Water TDS is above 800 mg/l --> RO+UV+UF Combination.

Explanation.


1. Before Buying.. Always.. and I mean Always Check the TDS of you Tap Water. You can use any TDS metre available on Amazon ( around INR 250 ).

Now.. If your TDS is around or below 200 mg/l... YOU DO NOT NEED RO.. I REPEAT.. YOU DO NOT RO. Why.. ?? .... cause RO is a process that removes most of the ( Around 90% ) TOTAL DISSOLVED SOLIDS / SALTS ( TDS ) from your water and makes it slightly ACIDIC in nature. And as you know.. Human Blood is slightly Basic in nature and thus drinking acidic water on a regular basis increases acidic content in your body.. making your immunity slightly weaker. If you use RO in this case. Your Output Water will have a TDS around 20 to 50 AND PLEASE READ THIS CAREFULLY... PLEASE DO NOT DRINK ANY WATER WITH TDS BELOW 150 mg/l on a regular basis ( EXCEPT COCONUT WATER which has a surprisingly high TDS OF MORE THAN 1000 mg/l ) If you really care about your health. :). You can see this article. Also. do note that TDS around 300 mg/l is excellent for you health ( WHO Report ).

Now.. it's clear You DO NOT need RO if your water TDS is around 200 mg/l. Still.. It may contain some impurities as well as harmful bacteria. So.. You will need a UV ( for organic impurities ) + UF ( For inorganic impurities ) Combination in this case.

2. If your TDS is above 300 mg/l --> Go for a RO+ UV +UF + TDS Control Combination. Because.. even in this case.. RO will decrease your TDS to around 50 to 70 mg/l... BUT here.. You also HAVE A TDS CONTROLLER.
Now remember... A Water Purifier works on several steps. First Water passes through Several Filters.. then through RO Membrane.. Then through UF Membrane.. then UV.. and other membranes if any and finally in the Storage tank.


Here.. the TDS Controller bypass some of the water directly to UF Membrane instead of passing it through RO and then add that water into the output of RO Membrane... thus increasing TDS by adding original Salts present in the Tap Water. So.. your Output TDS will be whatever you desire below your Tap Water TDS. I recommend above 150 mg/l.

3. If your TDS is Way above 300 mg/l.. I mean like 800mg/l or above.. you DO NOT NEED TDS Controller... as After RO Process.. your Output will be around 150 mg/l or above. So.. Go for a RO+UV+UF Combination.


NEXT STEP :

Electrical Type.. / Mechanical Type / Or a Combination of Both.

Answer is simple.. A combination of both BUT Please do note that some Electrical Water Purifier DO NOT allow Water Output when there is a power cut even if Water is present in the storage tank. So.. check before buying.

NEXT STEP :

Mounting Type... / Table Type / Undersink Type.

It really depends on your preference. Mounting Types are Wall Mounted.. Table Types are put on the table... and Undersink types are used in households having smaller kitchen or no space for wall mounting and table.

NEXT STEP :

Storage Tank Material:
More than 95% of the Water Purifiers use FOOD GRADE PLASTIC as a Water Storage Tank. But a few also use Stainless Steel. Some Water Purifiers that offer Hot Water Output have a combination of both Food Grade Plastic ( For Normal Water Tank ) and Stainless Steel ( For Hot Water tank ).... I would suggest to go for Stainless Steel. Still.. it's my personal opinion.. rest is your choice.

NEXT STEP :

Alkaline Membrane or Copper Membrane or Both.

This is also the most confusing part. Alkaline Membrane can be used if you are using RO... as it adds some basic salts in your RO Output Water increasing it's basicity as RO Water is slightly acidic in nature.
The Problem is there is no hard evidence that such water is really good for health. Some studies have shown that such water really helped many people to gain better health.. even removing joint pain... while other studies have shown no conclusive results. So.. it's your preference.

Now Copper Membrane is just a marketing gimmick. Don't go for it. Rest is your choice.

CRUCIAL STEP:

Sales After Service and Yearly Charge.
Many Companies like Kent or Pureit.. provide better service in some areas only. IN MY AREA.. KENT SERVICE is ABSOLUTLY pathetic. So.. please consult your neighbours or even online about the service of the company.
Also.. some Water Purifiers have an annual charge as high as 5K ( For Filters and Membranes ) while some has around ( 2K .. The minimum I Saw ). So.. check this beforehand.

That's it... follow these steps and gift yourself and your family a healthy Water Purifier. Again.. it's not a comprehensive guide.. as there are several features.. like Hot Water or Cold Water Output or fruit washer or Digital Display...and many more ... that today's Water Purifiers offer. And it's very important not to favour such fancy features over health. Please Prioritize You health.. and then your environment.

Finally.. Keeping all of the above in consideration.. I have decided to Go with BePure.
Now.. you must be thinking.. what's BePure..? Never heard of it...!???

Bepure is actually an Indian Startup providing Water Solutions. It has even won Silicon India Award and has many favourable reviews online.
So.. I am buying it's Bepure Alken Stainless Steel 12L ( RO + UV +UF + TDS + Alkaline ( Let's try it ) ) Model with an annual charge of around 2K. If anyone has used it.. Please write your experience. Thanks.

the amount of minerals that we take in from water is minimal. we have many other options through which the trace minerals removed from water can be covered. any re-mineralization chamber or articles which goes on about RO stripping water of useful minerals is just gimmick.

This is just a straight forward representation of what each method does. I'm saying RO stripping minerals from water does not have a huge impact as you are not dependent on water alone for those minerals. 2slices of wheat bread or 2slices of cheese take care of your calcium intake for a day. handful of seeds or nuts for daily magnesium intake and so on.

My generic RO system. Bought in 2015 for 4~4.5k. Can be maintained by ourselves as there are no complex parts. Membrane last changed 2.5yrs ago. Input TDS is 750+ and output RO water is 50~75TDS. Only issue so far, it started to leak near the water display section in the storage tank. Sealed it with epoxy resin and hardner. Thats the brown lining

  1. does your (this) RO Purifier requires electricity connection?
  2. Since it's installation, do you notice any NEW/Weird health issue (as claim by a user in Quora, link provided here by me)
  3. same model still available at AZ link here (please suggest if it's same or different compare to your purifier)
  4. Is it good for mix (Municipal + Open Well) water supply?
  5. Where do you source SPARES of same as it's 8 yrs old but still in working & good condition
 
Some people in my locality say ro/purifier water could cause constipation issues as well, but they buy water cans from bisleri.

1. Requires electricity for the pump to operate
2. No weird health issues
3. All RO UV UF systems have the similar set of parts. Sediment filter, Pre carbon, RO membrane, post carbon(optional), UV, UF, Mineralizer(optional)
4. I've used it in Noida where water was 1600tds or so and in Chennai now where bore water is 750tds. I see a 90% reduction on the tds.
5. As mentioned in point 3, RO parts are similar/generic that you shouldn't have issue sourcing spares. Refer to this link https://www.indiamart.com/proddetail/ro-filter-kit-24335045333.html . It has all the necessary parts and some extra to service your RO. Depending on the space you have in the top half of the RO system, you can accommodate as many filter options you want using RO Clamps like these.
 
I just bought the Urban Company native M2 couple days back for 17.5k. The water tastes damn near perfect for me. It's touch based dispensary, so far it works well and good, yet to see how reliable the touch after a few thousand litres.
It came with 2 year warranty with free service, free filter replacement, etc. Post that it's about 3.2k and the filters could last 1-2 years.
The only downside is it wastes a lot of water. 7lts wasted for every 3lts. I'm not sure if that's expected from all RO purifiers?

  2. None of India Mart supplier interested in 1 set or single unit as there they all SELLING in BULK to suppliers, here to (link provided by you) sell min 100 SET (i.e 1450 x 100 = Rs.1,45,000/-) order

Edit: Govt and other articles tell not to use RO because a lot of water is wasted in ro. If you want to filter 1 liter water, the ro unit will throw away 2-3 liters of water with extra tds and impurities that it removed from the 1 liter purified water. They are just blaming the end user for wasting water when water is a basic need. They don't blame companies that use too much water like soft drink companies or juice companies or farmers who waste water. It's easier to blame people because people don't talk back. There is water shortage but don't blame people for trying to drink clean water. No one can drink borewell water or pond water without filtering it properly.And the only filter that filters these types of water is RO filter. If you get municipal water you don't need RO purifier. A simple sediment+ carbon+ uv filter is enough to clean up municipal water.

1. No one in the household has grown extra limbs or toes since 2015. How would I realistically be able to correlate any health issue with RO water? What do you define as New health issue?
2. Indiamart link was for reference purpose only as it had all the items I was looking for, listed in the image and was clear to read. Please use amazon for retail purchases.

RO is only needed for water having TDS>500. Municipal water is usually <500TDS. Just boiling the water and using a 90's era ceramic candle filters would suffice for municipal water.

Please don't took my question otherwise, I just want to over come my worry (fear) that is there really any issue associate with consumption of RO water (as some articles, quora etc. suggest same, but you are the real user & more TRUSTWORTHY than those articles & post writers. so asking in details ... ).
  2. I think you bought spare for your purifier from Indiamart, but found seller selling in 100's of ... so ....
  3. Our society too starts mixing Municipal water with Ground water and plus frequent breaking of water pipe line always keep adding bad smell muddy water and in family we have Typhoid & Jaundice history.
  4. Also don't have high budget to go with BRNADED Purifier + Costly AMC + Costly Replacement Spares (ALL Cost like Bomb)

No worries. In your case of getting mixed water, you should always go with boiled water to kill disease causing germs. Brands have to pass on their overhead costs to someone right? Go with generic water purifiers and boil the treated water before consumption.
