Very urgent- Should I pick an iphone

just a quick stupid question though..it does support GPRS, and not only edge...right?

^^EDGE/EGPRS(Enhanced GPRS) is just a superset of GPRS .. So whatever supports edge has to support GPRS.. Wherever the network supports EDGE it will be used else GPRS will be used..

A few friends in the US chucked their iphones and moved back to blackberrys... iphone might be a nice flashy device, but end of day, you're not buying it for that reason alone I guess.
Very typical American.

Blackberry's suck in India, and everybody knows that, so I wouldn't ever take the opinion of a Blackberry user in the US. Its more of a you either "have it" or not thing out there ;)

well mate.....i aint pro as these other guys who have given their thoughts on it....but if u ask me as a laymen ( no pro ) i wud say its a nice buy....i mean....its a nice buy lookin @ the current scenario....its a nice flashy gizmo...and @ price like that..it sure is a buyers deal....n y wud u want to buy it after 6 monthz when every1 on the streets of mumbai n b'lore will have it in their hands?

nopes, but I need a nice functional device with a good UI and a good browser and good media capabilities is another plus...

good UI being the most important

unlike my PC where I don't mind digging deep inside menus/options to do what I want, my phone should be really simple to use since I am using it on-the-go

WM phones have a bad UI and bad browser, and OK productivity apps and multimedia

Blackberries have a good UI , bad browser, great productivity apps and bad multimedia

iPohone has an excellent UI, excellent browser, middling productivity apps and great multimedia..the biggest flaw perhaps is the lack of native 3rd party apps but that's something I am willing to live with since I have seen that on my WM and Symbian phones, I loaded them up with all sorts of 3rd party apps but hardly ever end up using them after a while....

I am heading out to get the phone now, I just hope the local apple store has it in stock today

Waste of money IMHO. I used one for a few days when I was in the US. Its all bling, no use. Everything it does is done by any other tom, dick, harry phone and more. I'd never buy one personally. But then thats just my opinion. Also I'm not sure if it supports all the frequency bands supported in India. AFAIK its an 850/1800/1900 device.

It's a kickass device. So long as the unlocking process ain't a PITA i.e.

@Chaos: GSM 850 / GSM 900 / GSM 1800 / GSM 1900

And why's it of no use eh ? It's the same price as an N73 or N80.

Don't see any real logic behind the iphone bashing.

Okay here were my reasons...

1) The onscreen keyboard input system refused to register my keystrokes correctly just way too many times.

2) I can't SMS without looking at the keypad unlike a normal phone. Lack of a physical keypad is a pain.

3) The battery in the Iphone is non removable. If the battery dies, well u gotta ship the device back to Apple to have it fixed

4) For the price, it better provide 3G

5) No expandable storage... no SD card slot

6) It lasted me barely a day and half on full charge

7) Now this is the biggest reason to reject it outright... Its a smartphone which supposedly allows you to check e-mail and the damn thing doesnt support syncing with Microsoft Exchange.

8) You can't play wave files, nor can you set them as ring tones.

9) Forgot to mention earlier... it doesnt support any form of push technology for mail/calendar syncing. Not that useful to me but for some folks this is absolutely necessary.

There's nothing in the horizon... as of now. All it works with are stuff that support POP3/IMAP which basically means unix mail servers and gmail. No corporation uses anything other than exchange these days.

About the onscreen keyboard, well apple better fix it quick. As of now in terms of functionality, the device is a complete sham.

1. Guess it takes some time getting used to ..
2. A personal thing ... I can't text without looking anyway ...
3. They replace it right ? So what's the issue ?
4. 16k ain't really that much for a phone like z iPhone.
5. You buy 8GB+ cards for your other phones ??
6. Gizmodo says the battery is really good :S
7. Wait for 3rd party apps ..
8. Umm, I think they've found a way around it ...
9. 3rd party apps ?

I hope superczar is not gonna replace his primary mobile (N73) with this. Lack of physical keypad is sometimes PITA, same applies to HTC touch, w/o the keypad things are quite touch to use, can't make call as quick as possible. One of my friend went from HTC Touch to Nokia 6300.

^ OMG didn't know that but that's phunny lol. Lots of copy paste everytime you wanna forward!

But take it easy guys, its not unusable as you people think, and most of the people commenting "iPhone is Bloatware" haven't even held one in their hand ;)

IMHO, all the people buying the iPhone are making a great choice!

Guys..hopped to the apple store in a hurry and picked it up in the morning...

Am in frankfurt right now and reaching chennai tonight....

It's a pretty decent thing for the price, and even though it can't do anything and everything that a open API based phone like Symbian or Win Moile based phones, it does whatever it does excellently well....witha browser and multimedia apps that are miles beyond what any other mobile device has...on top of it , it's only marginally more expensive than a Nano and does the ipod job better than a nano too....

now let me take a good night;s rest and then work on unlocking it.... :)

How is selling for 16k unlocked ? 16k ~$400 , which is almost the cost of a contract bound 8Gb phone ..what about the price for voiding the contract ?
