BSNL EVDO - have some queries about speed and charges

Thanx Dushie and kuduku for sharing the firmware.
I am not gonna tocuh them. since i dont have any problem with my sprint 595U.

On My way to office, Got one stretch where got full signals and it showed -49dBM . Immediately did a speed test and this is what i got.
I have changed it to EVDO only. Maybe it needs few configuration changes, because at 2 to 3 bars i am getting very low speeds. Waiting to reach office to test it out, Also would check the speeds at night.

What a contrast with the one in my signature : )

well you pay the price for the contrast don't you?
:)

That's right, but the only thing worrying me is very low speeds and high pings. Just modified the configuration to the one sent by Cisco_tech, still no changes in speeds or performance.
On 4 signals , -82 dBM , it is giving 0.15 Mbps download speed.

Are there any other changes to configuration to improve the speeds a little.

@ Dushie. See overall Speed depends on Tower location and userbase on the same tower. Sure -82dbm is not a good signals. but sometimes while roaming in city even on -95 to -105 dbm i do get 60-80 KBps. because of low userbase in that locality.

^ Yep. I tried in locations where I was getting -60 dBm or better signal levels but even then I was getting a mere 300kbps or so. It definitely depends on the numbers of the users in the area and how much bandwidth BSNL has allocated for EVDO. Since EVDO is not really advertised by BSNL, I don't think they are giving much attention to it and bandwidth allotments will be less.

^^ agreed varkey. sometime even on sunday noon @ home location where i get best signals i get only 160-200 KBps. but by the night time it comes back to 300-350 KBps.

so, i will wait for the night, and see if there is any difference. As of now the max speed i got in speed test is around 0.45 Mbps

So you are using the tin can with 595u also. Or only with your AC8700. It may be worth trying out.I tried downloading chrome through an download accerlator from file hippo. The max speed i got was around 25 to 30 KB.

U have the coke can setup inside your room or outside the house. I did have a diet coke can lying at home, Can try that out and see how it goes.
Your speeds are good, lucky you, having this speeds during the day time. Guess no one uses EVDO in your location, so you can make the most out of it.

@Dushie : a coke can next to the device helped me to increase the speed up by 20-40kbps. :D with fluctuations for devices like prithiv coke cans should be inserted inside for devices like sierra it should not be covered I will keep experimenting with house hold stuff whrn time is right will buy a proper antenna incase if i feel i will get higher speed.

guys, is that transfer speeds in IDM or the connection speed in speedtest site ?
also pls mention the speeds in kbps... its useful for comparing the speeds of other connections/networks... its a request to all of u fellow mates...

@Dushie : Ya really lucky cuz I am placed in an area covered by three evdo towers :D ( I checked in google maps ) so i can shift to any room in my house & still I will manage to get 1mbps connection.

Well, guess it's time to get a pigtail cable and try connecting the same to a patch antenna and see the results. Getting a pigtail locally is a challenge. I messaged the ebay seller, but did not get a response back.
@kuduku : Do you have his email, as i guess he is based out of china.

Thanks, Varkey Unfortunately i do not know head or tail of the type of connector and it's name. Kuduku posted few pics which i had saved to email the seller for what i want.

I feel he is the best guy to check which one of this cable will work as he is using the same.

The other thing which is going in my mind is that will signal strength really make a huge difference. The reason i ask this question is because there are too many other factors in play here. How many users in the area, available bandwidth etc. etc.

In office also with 3 to 4 bars on the signals my speeds are not crossing 30KBps. Waiting for night time. Will check in office and at home also.

I think this is the one --

SMA female to CRC9 male RF adapter connector for 3G USB Modem antenna | eBay
CRC9 male right angle SMA female RG174 3G Huawei Modem | eBay

Anyway all types of connectors are easily available for $2-$4 from eBay shipped to India. You need to first check what type of connector the antenna you are planning to use has.

Thanks, Varkey, @kuduku please look at these and confirm which one would work, then i would go ahead and order the same. The seller has shipping to India, so i believe it would be faster shipping it directly to India, than to US.

^ Yes, they do ship directly to India from HK / China.

But as I said, before you order the connector, you need to get the antenna and check which connector it requires. It may not be the same as the one @kuduku got!
