BSNL EVDO - have some queries about speed and charges

^ Didn't have EVDO when I was in Chennai, so not sure of the situation there.

RUIM is just like getting a GSM sim, you insert into the modem and start using it.

Seirra 595U is not easy to get. And there is no help in Bangalore to get it working with BSNL EVDO. So next option for me is to get a RUIM sim for the nearest city and state and to use it with a RUIM EVDO modem. Which other modem would you guys recommend to go for which will work well with Bsnl EVDO in terms of singal quality and speed. I am also thinking of buying a patch antenna to improve the signal strength, something like this (http://www.ebay.in/itm/150807119732?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649) would it help

^ Get the Sierra 595U itself and a RUIM, And if you can source a RUIM modem for a day we can help you configure the 595U with BSNL EVDO. You don't need any help from BSNL.

This is what I did

1. Got a EVDO RUIM from BSNL paying Rs 350

2. Inserted the RUIM into my ZTE 8710 modem and got the ESN and other details.

3. Configured the 595U with the info in the RUIM with the help of #[member='kuduku'] and #[member='cisco_tech']

4. That's it!

Thanks, varkey, unfortunately i am finding only used sierra 595U online, as you said the seller from whom you ordered, does not have any more on sale as of now. I saw few used ones on ebay but it is difficult to gauge the condition of the modem with pics. The used ones on Amazon are costsing 15$ shipped, on ebay it is slightly cheaper but very difficult to know the condidtion of the modem and the status of the USB connector. I am still looking out for the same to see if any other deals come across.i have also created an account in SNS to get the same if i get a good deal.

Worse case scenario which modem can i use until i get my hands on a 595U as that may take time.

At the same time i am also trying to source a EVDO connection for my use. Is it availabile in Chennai as i have a friend travelling there this weekend. If not which are the other nearby cities from where i can get an EVDO sim and use in Bangalore

You can then purchase the modem from BSNL itself for some 1.1k and there is no separate activation fee. You get Rs 399 as account balance too. So basically you get the modem for Rs 700 or so.

You can get the connection from Chennai pretty easily although they might ask for a local reference and their address proof, depends on the CSC.

My friend who is in Chennai will take the prepaid connection in his name and i will use the same in Bangalore. So if i take the modem form BSNL, the sim and the modem along with activation would just cost only 1.1k. That is less i thought they were selling modem for 1.5 k and connection was separate.

^ Sorry the price of 1.2k (not 1.1k) is only in Kerala. In Chennai it will be 1.5k as you said. If you buy the modem from BSNL, the activation fee is included and will have an account balance of Rs 399. You will need to topup for another Rs 400 or so for the 750 UL plan to be activated.

South Zone users can view the account balance, change plans etc through this portal -- http://218.248.69.126/cdmaprepaid/

I have ordered one used modem though shopabroad.I had saved a quote from them and paid that today. Keeping my fingers crossed now. Let's see how much time they take to deliver the same.

Finally after struggling for 3 hours today, I got a prepaid BSNL sim for Rs 370. Checked i got a balance of Rs 399 and 1 month validityPlease guide as to what recharge i have to do now and where to increase the validity and activate the 750 ul plan. I have used PayTM so if someone can shed some light on what recharges i need to do now. As i see both top up and recharge options on PayTM. Also the signal in my nokia mobile is good getting 4 bars. Have Tata photon EC1261 , will try and see if i can use the sim in that. As my sierra modem will still take time to come in.

^ Register here -- CDMA Customer Portal: Login

It will show you all the available topups and validity recharge options, it may vary with respect to circle. Anyway as you already have Rs 400 as balance, you would probably need to do a topup of Rs 400 which will give you an additional Rs 356 as balance, enough for the 750 UL activation. When you took the connection, did you specify the plan to be the 750 UL? If not, no issues, you can change the plan also from the CDMA portal.

Hi Varkey,
I have been able to successfully do the Rs 20 recharge and got a message that said you have 6 months validity and you have moved to the base plan. What does moving to base plan mean. Post which i did a top up of Rs 400 and got a balance of Rs 356. I will try and create a login and password for the link.

Registered, Check the plan online it shows EVDO unlimited so guess its activated.

Had a question as to what are the calling and sms charges on this connection and what will be the username and password for internet connection.
As when i asked them they just said its your no and did not give any other details.

Thanks for all your help. I have an EC1261 , is there any way i can get the sim to work in the same.

^ I guess you are on the pay as you go plan.

Create an account and you should be able to see all the details with respect to your connection. After that you can proceed with the 750 UL plan activation from the portal.

Yes, login in to the account and you will have the option to enter the string, then you need to enter your number and a verification message will be sent, which has to be entered again in the portal.

When i check in the portal it shows EVDO unlimited, under plan. Is there any other way to verify the same.Under package status it shows :

When i check my balance it is still Rs 755. Do they deduct balance on a daily basis or they just knock it off in one go.

Well, when I got the sim, I had negative balance of Rs 351 and status was 'Inactive', immediately after the topup the status changed the Active and I was able to use it.

The sim is working fine. After getting the same i have put it in my mobile. I am able to receive and make calls. Also it is showing the 6 months validity and balance of Rs 755. Guess until i don't use data would not get to know if there are any issues or not.

Yes, it looks pretty much same for me, so guess nothing to worry.

Thanks, Varkey for your help. Now i am sure it will take at least a week to get my modem from US and to get the same working you said i would need another modem to read data off the card.
How do i go about the same ? As i don't want to end up spending more money on this. Also is there anything else i need to prepare in advance to get the 595u working on this.

Yes, you will need another RUIM capable modem to read the data from the RUIM, it will take just 5-10 minutes to get the data and after that you can configure the 595U.

If the EC1261 works, well and good, else you need to find a temporary modem for few minutes.

Trying to get my hands on one. No luck as of now. Also no updates on my items shipping. How long do the shop abroad guys take to provide and update . The last one i got was couple of days back when they said they had placed an order.Post that no new updated. Worse case scenario i would need to buy one and sell it later once i get my work done. So i will start looking for any modems on resale on which i can get a good deal.

^ The next update that you'll get will be once the item gets delivered to their US office, depending on the shipping speed, it may take 4-5 days too.

Btw if you want, you can send the RUIM to me, I will read the data from it and send it back. :)
