BSNL EVDO - have some queries about speed and charges

Went to BSNL office to get a new EVDO connection and get it activated on the Sierra 595U. The person incharge of EVDO for Cochin area said he cannot register the ESN of an unknown modem into the system. They will only issue RUIM and if its a BSNL modem they may program it. I told him to just register the ESN and I will do the programming but he said not possible.

So got a ruim based connection, will try to clone the esn etc to the 595u and see if it will work. He also said to give a written request and they will consider if esn registration is possible.

Anyway will try it out tomorrow once the connection is active.

bad luck

get a friend zte BSNL device , take a new connection and after 2 days give an esn change application and get 595U registered . Dont take the device during esn change apllication , just give application . Thats what i did

#varkey Tell these babus to read below info on their own site. utterly foolishness by BSNL people.

http://www.bsnl.co.i...net_on_cdma.htm

Start-up Kit(SUK):

1. Activation charge of EVDO connection is renamed as SUK (Rs.350 for EVDO ). No separate SUK price for BSNL EVDO customers. If customer brings own data card, SUK price will be charged and no free usage value will be given.

Its a 10 mins job to add ESN into their ZTE NMS.

Becareful with clonning. Process is completely reversible though.

They said they stopped programming altogether and only issue RUIM even if you take their device. Only in case its an old BSNL EVDO modem they will even consider activating it.

Anyway I paid Rs 350 and got the RUIM with a Rs 400 balance. Did a topup for Rs400 and the UL plan shows as active in their online portal for cdma. Not able to connect yet. I am able to receive and make calls.

In the entire Cochin area only one person is incharge of EVDO and only he has the permission to activate etc as per the CSC. I'll go meet him on Monday.

What is the user / pass you are using to connect? I was told to use last 10 digit of sim number followed by @aaabb.a and use the last 10 digit of the sim as the password. Is it the same for you guys?

different settings in different states but the standard one is xxxxxxxxxx@AAAND.IN , local exchange ones for testing so that employees dont have to look for the mobile number are

Rajasthan 165 165

Gujarat cdma cdma

I told you best option is get the ZTE model and take it for activation , no one can deny on that device as its BSNL device

^ Now its working with last10digits@aaabb.a

I am currently using it on a ZTE 8710 which I got with TATA Photon, looks similar to the BSNL ZTE 8700 but doesn't have the BSNL logo. Will they accept? Anyway will go and check it on Monday.

Just got my connection today. Bought the BSNL device. Its named Prithvi. Am getting 3 signal bars and -84 dbm. Getting a download speed of only 70kbps. Was hoping for atleast 150kbps
<
. Is my only option changing to the Sierra modem for better speeds or is there anything else i can do???

^^ worth a try. It has improved my connection a lot. almost increased 100KBps. but do consider lots of factors like Distance, users in your locality.

But Sierra will improve the connection for sure.

Hi All,

I have a friend's HUawei EC1261 Tata Photon modem, just wanted to check, if this is compatible and work with Bsnl EVDO.Also i am unable to find a Bsnl EVDO RUIM in Bangalore, any idea or suggestion from where else i can get one from.

isnt roaming on evdo free?

i'd like to get on the cdma evdo bandwagon if possible. how is the connectivity in bangalore for cdma? overutilised or underutilised towers?

i am in basavanagar.

thanks. also just inquiring how difficult is programming a RUIM and channel info?

is it possible to just take a connection without the bsnl provided modem and plug and play into the cdma modem sourced from somewhere?

Yes, there is all india roaming.

If the modem has a sim / ruim slot, you just need to insert it and its ready. There is no programming necessary for ruim. Its only needed when there is no ruim slot in case of modems like the Sierra 595.

Not sure if you guys have noticed, if you recharge for Rs 20 you get 180 days validity, now you can convert that validity back to talktime. The surprising thing is, when you convert it back, you'll get Rs 72. Do that 11 times, you would have spent just Rs 220 but will have an account balance of Rs 792 enough for 30 days UL pack.

abhishek i am also looking to go for EVDO prepaid in Bangalore. If you find any BSNL exchange do issuing the same, let me know, would want to go for the same.

I don't want to invest too much into it, as i do see a tower 2-3 kms from my place. If it works well good, if it does not, don't want to go for a big hole in m y pocket with the initial expenses.

I get frequent disconnections like 1once every minute. This usually happens as soon as the device gets hot and that happens very quickly. Is anybody facing this issue?? Is the device faulty??

Thank you #[member='kuduku'] & #[member='cisco_tech'], got EVDO working on the Sierra 595U!

But the signal levels in my area is not at all good, most areas around -80dB only. Looking for an optimum location to place the modem.

Max speed I got was around 100 kBps when I kept the modem in a particular location at a specific angle! Lol

#kuduku - Both modems didn't work together!
<
Both modems can be plugged in at the same time, but if you connect from one modem while the other one is already connected, internet stops working. Both shows as connected but no data transfer.

good to know about modem and bad about the signal

can you get the patch antenna from bsnl ?

^ I'll be happy if I can get atleast 1 Mbps all the time. I will try placing the modem at various locations around the house to see if I can get a better signal.
<

Anyway I was getting 1 Mbps avg from 1 AM to 6 AM after which it dropped to about 512k and then to 200-300k and I haven't touched or changed the position of the modem at all.

No such issues for me, connection times are in the range of hours.

#[member='varkey'],

Where are u located in Chennai? I live near to Loyola College. How are the speeds of BSNL EVDO.

The only option I have are BSNL & Airtel BB both having 512/256kbps post FUP.

Can I go for EVDO or WiMax and hope for better speeds.

And a few more doubts.

1) If EVDO what device should I get for more & stable speeds.

2) I shuttle between Pondy, Chennai & Kanchi where I hope to use it. Can I do so if I get the signal? Roaming...

3) What plan should I go for?

^ I am no longer in Chennai, back at Cochin.

In case of EVDO

1. Get the Sierra 595U

2. Yes

3. Well, the Rs 750 UL plan!
