English TV series discussion

Many a times cinema people act too smart while adapting a book. That spoils it all.

More, nowadays there is forced diversity, inclusivity in some OTT, movie platforms which sometimes borders on stupidity which spoils some stories.

In conundrum if i should read the book first or just watch the show
There are 3 books in trilogy & you should read the books first, they are very good though some background knowledge of Chinese cultural revolution would help. I don't think it is currently financially viable to adapt second & third book so you will need to read the them anyway once you finish the live adaptation. Also, the Chinese version is longer & follows the novel much more closely.

Just completed the recent episode of Shogun (Episode 6).

This episode felt like a long pensive watch filled with political power shifts and the palpable emotional tensions between Mariko and Blackthorne.

Anyone else who is a Walking Dead fan (still!) and watching The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live?

The fifth episode was really infuriating to watch because the camera kept cutting away from the action sequences into those long boring dialogue exchanges between J and G! It got to a point where I almost about the quit watching it further but somehow forced myself to finish the episode.

Lets see how the season finale is on Sunday.

Watched the season finale (Episode 6) for The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live. One could easily argue how easily Rick and Michonne got everything they set out to do in the enemy base but at least they gave the show a final ending and we won't be getting anymore Seasons to this spin-off. Glad they made only 6 episodes and didn't drag the plot out.

Well... I mean it's Walking Dead so you are never quite certain that they won't sneak in another Season somewhere down the line though :p

I still remember when neagan came into the scene and best the shit out of Chinese guy(forgot name) and killed several crew members just for the fun of it. Never I had feared a character in any series like this I was literally shaking

Oh hell yeah! Negan's entry in the show was one of the most badass character entrances in any show till date for me! Negan with his barbed wire baseball bat which he fondly called "Lucille" raised such hell and tyranny... absolutely vicious stuff! Like you mentioned in your post the way he beat that Korean guy to a bloody pulp along with some other crew members was so hard hitting.

The worst part of this was that they left it on a cliffhanger and revealed who he killed in the first episode of the next season lol.

What I'm watching right now:
  • Shogun
  • The Three Body Problem
Both are very well made and have successfully defeated my short attention span.

Another entertaining watch was The Gentlemen. It's pretty light and casual.

What I am waiting for:
Severance Season 2
Tokyo Vice Season 2

Three Body Problem was good, but somehow I feel the whole thing lacks solid events. Its a very this happens that happens kind of story that doesnt have much solid moments or twists.
But I guess its the source material that's like this. S1 goes into Book 1 and 2. As per reviews they did it better than the book. Actors are solid.
Didnt know it was made by Dave and Dan, else wouldnt have watched it. Decent watch 6/10.
Netflix version which is compressed or the Chinese version which follow the novel very closely so much longer?
As per reviews chinese version is very repetitive. But thats what works in China like India, seasons that run long. This is a western remake.

I will have to watch both version to compare to novels but from the trailers I found Chinese version much closer to books than netflix version.

I took a look at wiki of episode summaries & it seems netflix version "preponed" certain key events in book 2 & book 3. The Chinese version follow the first novel much more closely.

It is a hardcore sci-fi in a way so need a certain level of familiarity with the concepts & a natural interest in astronomy/space to fully appreciate the story.

3 Body Problem

A boring snoozefest with insufferable characters, it would've been a better show with half the episodes with a 20 minute shorter runtime but they keep running around circles building relationships with bland characters.
A black guy who's apparently exceptionally smart but all he does on screen is smoke pot and sleep with women, the nanotech genius actress has one singular expression in all episodes and the cancer patient spends 1 hour trying to ask some woman out only to nope the f out, classic D&D stuff.
The only decent characters were Wade and the main guy on the ship. A bit reminiscent of the movie Contact in parts and apparently it gets better from book 2 onwards but I won't be holding my breath.

I'm watching the Netflix version. Haven't seen the Chinese version so can't comment but I have noticed that Chinese reviewers don't really have a high opinion of the Netflix adaptation.

The plot moves a bit slow at times and there is a lack of momentum but it's needed for casual viewers to absorb the "sci-fi" I guess.
