Which flavour of 2.3.4 are you on (Means Spice, Wellcom or Cherry) because I'm on Spice's 2.3.4 and trying to root and it doesn't get rooted (Followed Free Radical's Guide) and yes Display consumes most of the power. It is same for me.
From where did you get Spice's 2.3.4 ?? Is it an official release?

Last I knew only Wellcom and Cherry had released 2.3.4

Dear Friends

I am trying to root the phone but massage is like "firmware.nb0 is corrupt of or not opening through SD Card". I followed the procedure given on Igyaan, means, downloaded the file from cherry (on PC), extracted it and copied it to the folder ROOT (created new one), renamed the file and tried to boot it from card, what is my mistake......

I'm on the Cherry mobile version. From what i understood of the tutorial, it can be broken down thus..

1.copying the su,busybox and superuser.apk files to the phone

2. change permission for the files.

3. Using Nautilus with su rights, copy su and busybox to /system/bin/ and superuser.apk to /system/app/ ( The first time i didn't pay attention and copied all the files to /system/bin/ and wondered where i went wrong)

4.reboot

where are you stuck at? I'm no expert but maybe i could help. The above steps should work for all androids (not sure) because i don't see any device specific steps in there.

Check the post #491 here Yes, it is official but not from Spice India, it may be from Spice CSL, but pretty stable, I'm using it and I found it more stable than cherry mobile.

Don't put the firmware.nb0 file in any folder. Root directory is the first directory you see when you enter the partition. In case you're still confused, right click the 'firmware.nb0' file, select 'send to' and select your memory card. It should work now.

Do you see any difference in the battery life? Between the Cherry Mobile and the Spice version? It restarted a couple of times for me but no other issues.

thanks dude its working.....

Friend, I'm not stuck anywhere, I did all the steps but it didn't get root, I got no root access, and when I installed "Root Checker" (An app to check the Root from market, it says busybox installed correctly but su not installed properly) Anyhow long story short, I don't have root even though I followed all the steps correctly, I ran Live Ubuntu 11.04 on my lappy and copied the files from there to /system/bin and /system/app

I don't know about the battery as I'm most of the time connected to the usb tethering and it gets charged through that, but cherry used to reboot frequently and spice is pretty stable in that way, but spice has some service provider installed apps ( already installed) like Blueberry Messenger, Blueberry Club, CSL Fun club, Map king

N.B. Do keep an eye on this thread @ XDA FORUMS for 1st custom ROM by nprusell (Villian ROM), its not released yet but going to be released within a day or two.

Glad i could help. Enjoy Gingerbread !

i see. That's weird. Only thing i can think of is maybe the permissions for su are not set properly.

I'm tethered most of the time too. It has restarted only twice on me though. Been on Gb for a few days now.

And the custom ROM development has hit a wall too. More than the overclocking, i'm interested in the undervolting just to see if it helps save battery. Other than that, i'm all set!

You can still downclock with SetCPU if you are rooted but clocks have to be set after every reboot.

mine downclocks to 122Mhz (stock 245) just fine.

pershoot's kernel has voltage mods. I sure hope to see it implemented in a custom rom soon.

Yes, I will try to give the permission from XP, I tried from win 7 and administrator mode also, and No, custom ROM development has not hit the wall, this is not an Indian guy (Android4u) you are thinking about, this is completely new and has started working on the custom ROM yesterday or day before

i'm using NoFrillsCPU. With min set at 245mhz and max at 368. It loads the settings automatically at every boot for me.
Will test it at this settings for a day or two. Been working fine since last night though. Using Launcher Pro with 'opening speed' set to 10 (fastest), i don't see much lag at all once everything's loaded properly after booting.
I saw the xda thread and i think i know where the $10 lying in my paypal account is going.

Once you're in Command prompt i don't think it should matter which version of Windows you're on. I used Win7.

Did you try installing Terminal Emulator from market and typing su? i seem to remember doing that to see if i had root instead of an using an app.

Thanks for the advice. did that but permission denied ( I'm waiting for the custom rom release or else I'll flash again to cherry magnum and wellcom 2.3.4 and try on them (I already tried to root on cherry Magnum) no luck, but not going back to 2.2.2

Well, if i were you i'd start the whole thing again from scratch. lol

or just wait for the custom ROM to land :) Should be here soon.
I already flashed 2-3 times with cherry and spice and did the same process 3-4 times but I cannot understand what I'm missing and where I'm doing wrong.

I even have wiped user data and cache everytime before flashing.

just to be sure, when you connected your phone in download mode in Linux, did it automount all the available partitions?

I had to close all those windows and use the one that popped up after i typed 'su nautilus' in terminal.

When you have su rights, the colour of the background in Nautilus changes (it changed to green for me in Mint Linux)

Other than this, i'm out of ideas in your case. We'll just have to wait for the xda ROM.

Yes, all the partitions auto mounted and even I too close them and use the one which has been opened after issuing the command sudo nautilus.... No, The colour of the background in nautilus remained same under ubuntu but I got root written.

friends, I have upgraded to GB....but feel lag during browsing...... what is the problem.... is it GB or network problem (may be because of rainy season). What is your experience?

ok. Did you try with different versions of su? Could you try doing this again one last time?
Code:
chmod 6755 /data/local/tmp/su
chmod 755 /data/local/tmp/busybox
chmod 644 /data/local/tmp/Superuser.apk

Try changing to "WCDMA only" (if there's 3g reception in your area) or "GSM only". try disabling and enabling/disabling data.
I use Miren browser and the speed is acceptable. When my 3g is working, it's blazing fast !
