Yes Photoshop (CS 5). Its done through layer masks. Just google it, you will get many tips.

^Guess what a friend gave me an executable version of PS CS3 and I've been in love ever since. Very very addictive.

Tutorials are the way to go - I saw countless tutorials for each subject. I wish I had more time with me though.
