BSNL 3G Thread

Yes there are huge queues in BSNL offices right now for BSNL 3G after the RS 4200 offer. Btw ur 2G sim can also access the 3G network...out ur phone to UMTS/3G mode to check the signal strength

Hi people,

BSNL 3G Rocks :) Got a new 3G Sim from BSNL Shoppe. Useless people won't do 56/58 FRC. So had to do a 120 FRC.

3G was on as soon as the bsnl guy recharged/acrivated the sim. Voice took two hours to activate, but who cares?

I am enjoying unlimited 3G for 7 days now and speeds are awesome :)

And I saw some 4-5 people do the 4200 recharge when I went there to get the sim! BSNL is in demand!

@supra
As i mentioned before that roadside kirana shop selling bsnl cards. I enquired yesterday again and it has the 3g card too but a different one. It costs 250 rupees and has 120 FRC and 150 rupees talk time. I did not take the card because of this high cost.

Got the BSNL sim for Rs179(59+120FRC). the babus were not ready to give the sim alone:|

I am using APN as : bsnlnet I do not get 3G signal in my room, only after going on roof I get speeds of about 80-100kbits/s which sucks

what apn are you guys using and tips to get max possible speeds?

Damn I will have to do the Rs 4200 recharge very soon and sleep in sound for next 6 mnths :p
Is it possible to recharge for Rs.4200 online? (from third party sites like freecharge.in) or do we need to get any special kind of voucher for this?

Online its not possible I think.

But you can go to any local BSNL recharge shop and get it done. Tell them its 'Recharge' and NOT 'Topup'.

^ The apn is 'bsnlnet' itself.

Try putting the modem near the window using a USB extension cable or something?
I am not using data card. I use nokia 5800XM. I tried at my home, at my friends place and few other places too. Even if full signal strength and 3.5G indication(which means HSDPA is supported on network) download speeds are patheic.

I only manage to get 20-25kBps, it never crosses 30kBps. Highly disappointed:(

^ Which SIM 2G or 3G and plan? For 2G plan speed restricted to 25-35kBps in 3G network.
Its a 3G sim, don't know about plan. I just asked babu to give me 3G prepaid sim for which I paid 179bucks. Rs59 for sim and 120for recharge. Got Rs50balance and 6months validity. I tried with access point as bsnlnet, bsnllive. no same speed on both.

The card in which the sim came, looked like this:

Those people didn't knew how to operate a touch screen phone, not sure they would help me with my slow speed problem:mad:

Gaurish's I too have a data card plan and when I use it with my HTC Legend supports speeds upto 7.2 Mbps I get around 2.2 Mbps but when I use it with my nokia 5800xm I am not going above 400 - 450 kbps in Nokia 5800 I am getting 3.5G signal, there is no signal problem with both HTC and Nokia, but I am getting great results with HTC but very average results with Nokia so I am a bit surprised.

Thanks everyone for suggestions, here is the speedtest:

IDM did get me more speeds, which makes me assume that bsnl 3g is only good for downloading. browsing is painfully slow

Overall, Speeds are not that good. I expected atleast 1mbps.

^^ Did u connect via USB cable only ? Also remove PC suite and the Nokia USB Modem drivers and do a reinstall and check out. If signal is good u should get 1 Mbps easy.

^That is way too low! I mean even less than 512kbps connection. Something's wrong there. I should get my card this week. Shall post back the results.

Gaurish, try another device perhaps? Tethering always results in lower speeds - I have noticed this from the user experiences.

Gaurish the speeds are good I used it in my Android mobile HTC legend and was getting around 2 Mbps most of the time, but when I use nokia 5800 I am not getting good speeds, both connections were via USB cable.
