Guys now that i have got my Nokia 5230, it is time for some questions...

PS: Noobie with touch and smart phones :ashamed: So please bear with my noobie queries here.

1. How do i check the firmware of my phone and what is the latest firmware ??

2. In GPS i have only kept Assisted GPS, and Integrated GPS only as On. Now tell me how to check my current location ??? In my roomie's 5800 it has something called as "My Location" . I cannot see it here

I start Maps app but then it does not show anything :S

Edit: I updated OVI maps and now interface seems to be different and it has something called "My Location". But clicking that does show something in latitude longitude thing on top, but the GPS strength bar is just 1 bar blinking and no map type thing shows on screen. What is the issue ??

Dial *#0000# and you will get the device details screen. The latest version is V12.0.089.

^^ Mine is showing as 11.0.079...which means i need to update. Will update after charging it full.

What does this software update do ?? Any additional stuff / bug removal etc ??

keep that ovi maps opened for 5 mins and be sure u r under clear sky or near some window or in balcony etc. the gps will take time to lock. then ur position will be shown.

Must be some critical updates since the Ovi suite kept pestering me to update it.:P Also Nokia recommends updating the firmware on their cellphones as the phone apps versions are updated too.

The only change I have noticed after the update is that the menu transitions are a bit smoother and the auto rotate isnt as dumb as it was previously.

I havent used the GPS ever so cant help you with that query.

The firmware update is over 80MB.

1. Menu->Settings->Phone->Phone management->Device updates will show the details.
2. Normally you have to be in the open (unobstructed sky) to get the satellites. Also you may have to enable GPS. AGPS is assisted GPS. (though heard that there are AGPS sets which work itself with GPRS without GPS chips)

But I do get more than 4 satellites even inside the building, but I always have GPS, AGPS and GPRS enabled.

Apart from the changes mentioned (after update) I feel battery lasts longer. You can update through Nokia Suite or directly from phone through GPRS.

Ovi Suite+Data Cable+Nokia 5230+Internet.
You sure you weren't running the latest version already?

I have all my contacts in my Sony Ericsson w800i phone. Any way to put all these in this Nokia 5230 with minimal effort ??

I too was in the same situation. Dealer had told that it may be possible through Outlook using Nokia Suite. But finally had to do manually. But may be there is some way.

Backup them to the SIM and use the SIM in the 5230 to copy them on the phone. Or you can try sending them through bluetooth which can be annoying since the phone receives the bluetooth files as messages.

Manually will be PITA. So cant do that.
Copying in SIM is out of question as most of the names have multiple numbers and in some cases pics too.

^ Er , use Sony Ericsson PC Suite , back them up to windows contacts , than use Nokia PC Suite to syn them to the phone .

Few more queries

I am really not able to sort out this gps thing. When i start gps maps apps in my 5230 after some time it does give me some coordinates but on the screen there is no maps shown. Is it that we need to download maps from somewhere.

Also Please suggest some good apps for the 5230.

Ps: Mods please rename this thread to "the definitive nokia 5230 thread"

Download Nokia Map Loader to download and install country specific maps.
